MSU Debate team starts season strong by qualifying for quarterfinals in Georgia State tournament

September 23, 2014

The MSU Debate team started its 2014-15 campaign with a strong finish in the quarterfinals of the Georgia State University National College Debate Tournament in Atlanta, GA.

International relations seniors Jack Caporal and his partner Quinn Zemel engineered the team’s success this past weekend by defeating teams from the University of Kansas and Wake Forest University en route to the quarterfinals.

Caporal and Zemel ultimately lost on a 3-2 split decision to a team from Northwestern University.

“There’s always a lot of energy heading into the first competition of the year and finishing with a team in the top eight was a strong showing for us,” head coach Will Repko said in a statement. “The first tournament helps the students get a lay of the land in terms of the competition out there and get prepared for the long season ahead.”

Seven total teams represented MSU at the tournament. International relations junior Tyler Thur and math junior Margaret Strong also finished in the top 16 at the tournament.

For its next challenge, the team will head to the University of Kentucky on Sep. 30 to compete in a four-day weekend tournament.
