ASMSU awaiting results of health survey

September 19, 2014

The improvement of student health and wellness on campus was the main talking point when ASMSU committees convened Thursday evening.

ASMSU expected to receive results Friday from the National Collegiate Health Assessment, a representative survey of student health on campus.

The survey had a small random sample size, but Conwell said he believes it will be a good indicator of the state of health at MSU.

On Tuesday, AMSU President James Conwell and Vice President of Special Projects Ryan Smith took part in a conference call with White House Staff regarding a new “It’s On Us” campaign.

The call involved more than 800 students from universities throughout the U.S. and focused on changing the culture of sexual violence in college life by partnering with celebrities and organizations to spread awareness and promote education about rape and sexual assault.

“It really is up to us,” Smith said. “A change needs to be made and it starts with students”.

President Barack Obama will soon host a live discussion regarding the “It’s On Us” program’s implementation in universities across the nation.

The policy committee also voted on a bill to allow representation from class councils on the GA, but past attendance from these representatives made committee co-chair Evan Schrage nervous.

“We may need to enforce an attendance policy,” Schrage, a public policy senior, said. “We gave them representation last year and I don’t think they ever showed up.”

Members agreed to add an attendance policy and a requirement to attend committee meetings to the bill. After the amendment, the bill was passed.

Class councils are also beginning to plan events for the upcoming semester, including several celebration of various cultures such as an “Aladdin Night” with Arabic food and music. Another plan involves looking into adding handicapped seating in the student section at Spartan Stadium. Currently, the only disability-friendly seating is located on the other side of the stadium.

Previously discussed initiatives were also given attention, like the voter outreach program which is in the process of setting up dates in various buildings around campus for ASMSU reps to volunteer and help students register to vote.

The General Assembly will next meet on Thursday Sept. 25.
