Women's soccer improves to 2-0 with shutout victory over Cal State Fullerton

August 25, 2014

The women's soccer team continued its solid start with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.

The visiting Spartans (2-0-0) jumped out to an early lead when freshman forward Jamie Cheslik scored in the sixth minute in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Junior forward Allyson Krause lobbed a through ball to Cheslik, who then beat her defender in the penalty box and took the shot near the post in the lower left corner of the penalty box.

Fullerton took 16 shots compared to MSU’s five, and also outnumbered MSU in cornerkicks 12-1. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Courtney Clem recorded four saves in another solid game and her first shutout of the 2014 campaign.

Cheslik, a product of Northville, Mich., has proven to be a young asset for the team so far. She has scored in both regular season games, as well as in an earlier exhibition against No. 3 Virginia.

Cheslik has made an immediate impact this season but her high level of play thus far is not unexpected. MSU Head Coach Tom Saxton previously said in an MSU release that he expected Cheslik to make “a quick adjustment to the college game with her physical and hard-working style."

Krause has assisted on goals in both games this season, and she already has half the number of assists this year (2) than she had last year (4).

MSU will head back home for their next contest, and they are set to play Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. ET on Aug. 29 at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing.
