Women's soccer defeats San Diego State in season opener

August 23, 2014

The women’s soccer team kicked off its 2014 season last night, securing a 3-1 victory over San Diego State.

The Spartans scored the first goal on a penalty kick by junior defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz at the 11th minute, and followed it up with another goal from redshirt junior forward Rachel VanPoppelen in the 29th minute.

MSU struck again in the second half, on an unassisted breakaway goal from freshman forward Jamie Cheslik in the 70th minute. San Diego State got on the board with a late goal in the 89th minute, leaving the final score 3-1.

"We played good team defense and were opportunistic early. We're very pleased because it was a great win in a tough environment,” MSU head coach Tom Saxton said in a statement released by MSU.

Spreading the wealth around, three different players scored for the Spartans.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Courtney Clem was solid in net, tallying 13 saves in the win. Clem drew praise from Saxton, as she just missed posting a shutout.

"Courtney was very good tonight. She maybe played the best game of her career to this point," said Saxton.

The Spartans will stay on the west coast, and they will visit Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
