Board of Trustees approves dean appointments, hears GEU appeal on health care

August 29, 2014

MSU’s Board of Trustees met this morning in the Administration Building where the agenda centered on personnel actions, specifically dean appointments and professor tenure, construction plans and Graduate Employee Union health care changes.

Of the personnel actions approved, Leo Kempel was promoted from acting dean to dean of the College of Engineering and Elizabeth Simmons added acting dean of the College of Arts and Letters to her position as dean of Lyman Briggs College.

All personnel actions were approved unanimously.

The board also unanimously approved the planning for a new Intercollegiate Golf Building at the Forest Akers Golf Course as well as a second addition to the Eli Broad College of Business that would include a Graduate Pavilion.

The Vera M. Wallach Honors College Scholarship Fund and Vera M. Wallach Fellowship Fund for Graduate Students were approved unanimously by the board as well.

Outside of the planned agenda, three MSU graduate students and teaching assistants and David Hecker, President of Michigan’s American Federation of Teachers, spoke on the Graduate Employees Union’s behalf about their discontent with the recent changes in their health care coverage. No action was taken at the meeting.

Four new student liaisons were also introduced to the board. Among them was international relations senior Adam Grajewski, also a decorated Marine and international aid on campus.

“I already engage with students of all backgrounds in the residence halls and things that concern them and issues that they’re facing, especially first year students,” Grajewski said. “I think this definitely gives me leverage to actually make change for them, in a meaningful way. It’s gonna impact their academic success and their experience at MSU."
