MSU volleyball sweeps Friday doubleheader in Alabama

Mission accomplished for the Spartans, who defeated Southeastern Louisiana and UAB in straight sets.

MSU (2-0) defeated Southeastern Louisiana in straight sets (25-8, 25-11, 25-21) in the day game of the doubleheader.

The win extended the Spartans win streak on season openers to six straight seasons and improved Head coach Cathy George record to 8-2. This was also the fifth straight year the Spartans won their opener by a 3-0 margin.

The underclassmen led the charge for the Spartans. Freshman outside hitter Holly Toliver had a game high 14 kills. Freshman setter Rachel Minarick contributed 23 assists and four digs.

Sophomore middle blocker and opposite hitter Allyssah Fitterer chipped in ten kills and six digs.

Senior libero and captain Kori Moster had 17 of the team’s 42 digs and six assists. Senior middle blocker/ outside hitter and co-captain Jazmine White recorded three kills and two blocks.

The Spartans responded with another victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader, defeating UAB in straight sets (25-20, 25-10, 25-9).

Toliver and Minarick once again powered the Spartans to victory. Toliver led the team with ten kills while Minarick set her team up with 37 assists.

Defensively, freshman middle blocker Alyssa Garvelink had four blocks. Moster had 11 digs.

MSU is back in action tomorrow for another day-night doubleheader at the UAB/Samford tournament. The Spartans will travel to Samford’s Pete Hanna Center to play Jacksonville State at 1 p.m and Samford at 8 p.m.
