MSU alumna to receive Detroit Athletic Club award

May 12, 2014

Recent MSU graduate and former volleyball player Kristen Kelsay will be recognized Monday evening as one of the recipients of the Detroit Athletic Club’s Michigan Student Athlete of the Year award.

The DAC awards both high school and collegiate athletes annually. One female and one male are recognized.

The last MSU athlete to receive the honor was former baseball player Brandon Eckerle in 2011.

Along with excellence in athletics, collegiate nominees must have a GPA of 3.0 or above as well as "recognized citizenship," such as volunteering or school leadership in order to qualify for the award.

As the recipient of this year’s award, Kelsay will receive statewide recognition. She said she was very humbled when she found out she would be receiving the award.

“I know there are a lot of deserving female athletes in the state of Michigan,” Kelsay said.

Kelsay was nominated by director of athletic communications Jamie Weir Baldwin. Kelsay said any college in the state of Michigan can nominate as many student athletes as they would like.

MSU’s Athletic Department will receive a $2,500 donation as part of the award.
