The gymnastics team placed eight at the 2014 Big Ten Championships on Saturday at State College, Pa, with 194.500 points.
MSU competed in the afternoon session of the tournament — starting at noon — with No. 8 Michigan, No. 24 Ohio State and Iowa. The 5 p.m. session consisted of No. 9 Nebraska, No. 14 Penn State and No. 16 Minnesota.
Michigan took first place in the conference, with a score of 197.550, followed by Nebraska with 196.950 and Minnesota with 196.675.
Illinois placed fourth, scoring 196.625, Penn State in fifth with 196.475, Ohio State in fifth — scoring 196.400 — and Iowa in seventh with 195.375 points.
Junior Alina Cartwright led the Spartans on vault, scoring a 9.800, but tied for 23rd — Minnesota's Lindsay Mable took first place with a perfect 10. She also led MSU on beam, tying for 11th with a score of 9.825. Nebraska's Emily Wong scored a 9.950 to place first.
On bars, sophomore Lisa Burt scored a 9.850 and tied for 14th place. The event's winner was Joanna Sampson from Michigan, with a score of 9.925.
Freshman Elena Lagoski placed the highest for MSU in the conference competition, tying for ninth with a score of 9.900 on floor. Both Sampson and Wong won the event — getting perfect 10 scores.
In the all-around competition, Cartwright placed 12th with a score of 39.225, followed by teammate Burt, who tied for 13th with Nebraska's Jennie Laeng with a 39.175.
