Campbell charged with aggravated assault, one other charge in Wayne County

February 11, 2014

MSU football verbal commitment Jayru Campbell received some bad news today as he was charged with two adult felonies by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Campbell, a junior from Cass Tech High School in Detroit who is verbally committed to join MSU in 2015, received the charges after an incident last month where he body slammed a security guard from Cass Tech.

He was charged with aggravated assault and intent to do harm less than murder. Campbell is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.

The incident received national news attention, and videos taken by students at school were all over the Internet allegedly showing Campbell picking up the security guard and slamming him to the floor.

According to Worthy, Campbell allegedly attacked the guard after the guard asked him to remove his hood in the halls. He then tried to send Campbell to the the office and Campbell attacked.

The security guard suffered a head injury and sustained an open wound.

This isn’t the first time Campbell has got into trouble. Following Cass Tech’s loss to Detroit Catholic Central in the state semifinals in November, Campbell punched a player from Catholic Central in the hand shake line following the game. He is suspended for next season’s opener.

Campbell, a quarterback for the Cass Tech football team, is one of the top high school football recruits for the class of 2015.

The university has not yet decided if it will pull his scholarship.
