In the second-to-last Big Ten series of the 2013 season, the MSU baseball team dropped the first of a three-game series against Iowa, 2-6, Friday night in Iowa City.
MSU jumped on the board first in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore second baseman Kevin Goergen started it off with a single to center field. Freshman left fielder Cam Gibson, who had both the RBIs for the Spartans, brought Goergen in with a single to right field, to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the Spartans were unable to recover after the Hawkeyes posted a five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior pitcher Andrew Waszak (5-3) gave up seven hits and only two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Waszack also had two strikeouts, in a losing effort.
Michigan State (28-15, 9-7 Big Ten) won four of their last five including two midweek wins over Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
Iowa (18-26, 6-13 Big Ten) is ninth in the Big Ten standings.
Junior right-hander David Gardner (4-3) will get the start the start in the second game of the three-game series at Iowa City, game time set for 2:05 p.m.
