Spartan baseball sweeps Oakland in four-game series

March 24, 2013

The Spartan baseball team had an outstanding weekend as they swept Oakland in a four-game series at Eastern Michigan’sOestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The teams met at Eastern because of snow covering Kobs field. MSU won all four of its games with performances that included a complete game, a walk-off home run, and a no-hitter.

The Spartans began the weekend series Friday with a 5-2 win against the Golden Grizzles. Senior Andrew Waszak pitched a complete game with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Saturday, MSU and Oakland played a doubleheader and the Spartans won both games, 3-2 and 2-1.

In Saturday’s first game, sophomore Ryan Krill hit a walk-off home run to right field. It was his first home run of the season.

In the second game of the day, redshirt junior Chase Rihtarchik pitched a no-hitter, facing 31 batters and allowing just three walks. He is the first MSU player to pitch a no-hitter since Nolan Moody did so against Northwestern in 2009.

The Spartans finished the series Sunday afternoon with a final decisive victory over the Golden Grizzlies, winning 7-0.

After the weekend’s games, the Spartans are on a seven-game winning streak. Their record for the season is 13-7.

Next up, the MSU baseball team will play the Central Michigan Chippewas in East Lansing on Wednesday, March 27 at 3:05 p.m.
