The MSU baseball team continued its winning ways with a 6-1 victory against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday in Ypsilianti, Mich.
With the Crosstown Showdown with the Lansing Lugnuts on Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing along with a three-game series this weekend with in-state rival Michigan, head coach Jake Boss Jr. limited the innings of his pitchers in the game.
Freshman pitcher Mick VanVossen got the start for the Spartans and sprinkled four hits in four innings of work and surrendered just a run left the game down one. His replacement, junior southpaw Trey Popp was the beneficiary of a five-run inning in the sixth and he would be credited with the win on the day.
Junior third baseman Torsten Boss and freshman first baseman Ryan Krill paced the offense with two hits apiece, including a home run by Boss in the fourth inning. In addition, junior second baseman Ryan Jones added a pair of RBIs to with his single in the sixth to increase the Spartan lead and put them ahead for good in the game.
After the team’s eight-game winning streak was snapped by Ohio State on Friday, the Spartans (18-8, 2-1 Big Ten) now have won three in-a-row heading into a big game with the Lugnuts and a big three-game series with U-M.
