Softball swept by Boilermakers in Big Ten opener

March 25, 2012

In its Big Ten opener, the MSU softball team suffered a 2-0 loss to Purdue on Sunday, bringing a close to its three-game weekend series in West Lafayette, Ind.

The game was off to a slow start until Purdue scored the two and only runs of the game in the bottom of the second.

MSU’s starting pitcher sophomore Cassee Layne was replaced by freshman Carly Nielson in the fourth after allowing the two runs and four hits.

Nielson earned three strikeouts and only gave up four hits while pitching.

This loss follows a double-header on Saturday, where Purdue beat MSU 10-6 and 8-4, respectively.

The MSU softball team currently 10-19 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

The home season will open this week when the team hosts Butler at 4 p.m. Thursday and Ohio State for a three-game series starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
