Baseball 'not satisfied,' looks to improve during weekend games

February 23, 2012

Even after getting a win last Friday against No. 11 St. Johns, junior second baseman Ryan Jones and the MSU baseball team weren’t entirely satisfied with the results of the opening weekend.

Dropping two of its first three regular season games in Florida, the Spartans — who are coming off the program’s first Big Ten Championship season since 1979 — are looking for a shot at redemption as they head back south this weekend to open up a four-game series.

The Spartans travel to Greenville, S.C., for the fifth straight year for a doubleheader on Friday, facing Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. and Furman at 5 p.m. MSU then will square off against Furman at 4 p.m. on Saturday and close with Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at 12 p.m.

“We lost two games, so we’re not happy, and we’re not satisfied,” Jones said. “I thought overall, we played pretty well. We just let a couple plays slip from us and lost focus for a couple innings, and we paid for it. But we focused this week in practice, and I think we’re ready to go this weekend.”

This weekend marks the third edition of the First Pitch Invitational at Fluor Field in Greenville.

Last season, the Spartans went 2-1 in the weekend tournament with wins against Charleston Southern and Furman before falling to No. 6 Clemson 8-0 in the finale.

With senior pitcher Tony Bucciferro set to open the weekend against Miami and a hot offense led by junior outfielder Jordan Keur, the Spartans have an opportunity to get back on track, MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said.

In his fourth season leading the program, Boss said the team was disappointed in the overall results of the first weekend, and the mindset is one looking for a weekend sweep.

“Obviously it’s different from basketball, different from football where you don’t really scheme for somebody or you don’t develop a game plan for somebody, per se,” Boss said. “You’re more concerned about how you play, you know. I think if we execute and we do the things that are fundamental to Spartan baseball, I think we’re going to be successful.”

Replacing Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Kurt Wunderlich in the rotation, Bucciferro said he has the experience of anchoring a staff. Last Friday, Bucciferro threw six scoreless innings and picked up the win — the 21st of his career — for the Spartans against St. Johns.

Despite the subtraction of Wunderlich from the staff, Bucciferro said he has had the opportunity to be in the rotation his whole career and will be ready to do it each weekend this season.

“I’ve been in the weekend rotation for all my career here,” Bucciferro said. “The transition wasn’t all that hard. I’ve learned from (former Spartans Nolan) Moody, (A.J.) Achter and (Kurt) Wunderlich. I learned from all three of those guys, and they made the transition real easy for me.”

Bucciferro said the Spartans will need to keep playing the style of play that’s expected by Boss and his staff to get back in the winning column this weekend.

“We’re just gonna play our game (and) just keep the things we do,” Bucciferro said. “Play the game the right way, limit the mistakes, and, you know, we’re gonna go in there expecting four games and four wins out of it. I’m looking forward to turning our record from 1-2 to a winning record.”
