Spartans open season with 3 wins

February 13, 2011

The MSU softball team kicked off its season in winning fashion, going 3-2 in its first five games this weekend at the Lead-off Classic in Deland, Fla.

It started with an opening-day win over Boston College by a 2-0 margin on Friday. Later that day the Spartans blasted Stetson, 8-1, thanks to a monster fifth inning. Trailing 1-0 at the bottom of the fifth, a four-run rally was sparked by a lead-off home run by sophomore Jayme O’Bryant to put the Spartans on the board and eventually, the lead.

Senior outfielder Jessica Bracamonte also had a great performance going 3-for-3 with two RBI’s and scoring twice.

On Saturday, MSU suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 4 Tennessee by a score of 11-2. The team couldn’t come back from a devastating seven-run first inning by Tennessee.

Saturday’s competition was wrapped up by completing a sweep of Boston College by winning 8-6. The Spartans got off to a quick start to the game by knocking in five runs in the second inning and were able to maintain their lead throughout the game. Junior pitcher Lauren Kramer improved to 2-0 on the year after five innings of work and posting four strikeouts.

The team took another loss to Tennessee on Sunday, this time by a difference of 14-0.

MSU’s next matchup is a date with Saint Louis at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla.
