WEB EXTRA: Pets deserve holiday presents too

December 9, 2005

As the holiday season shopping rush continues, don't leave your furry family off your list.

For those who have pets it can be really simple to include them in your holiday fun. Plus, you would be really surprised to learn what you can find for them.

Stores have included apparel to make your pet look like Santa or a reindeer. They also have plenty of toys and treats to satisfy your pet during the holidays.

Mark Pincumbe, assistant manager for Soldan's Pet and Feed Supply, said that some hot items this season are heated beds, Christmas toys and holiday treats.

The holidays can also be an excuse to spoil your pet by buying them a new cage, bed or collar.

Pincumbe said the store has planned events to celebrate the holidays.

"Last weekend people brought their pets in to take pictures with Santa," Pincumbe said. "We also have gourmet holiday cookies and decorations."

Pincumbe said that they have seen an increase in sales during the holiday season.

"A lot of people don't have children, so their pets are their children, and they buy for them," Pincumbe said. "They spend hundreds of dollars on squeaky toys and treats."

Theatre freshman Lauryn Fagan said she can't wait to go home and shop for her dog Maxy since it's her first Christmas.

"I will get her toys and bones for Christmas and wrap them up for her," Fagan said.

Pincumbe said that this is his first Christmas with his cat Chauncey, and he plans on getting him some toys.

"He is another member of my family and needs a present just like everyone else," he said. "Holiday pet shopping can be just as competitive as shopping for a human."

Web sites of pet stores are also offering sales to bring in customers. Some are offering free shipping and handling as long as you spend a certain amount.

Pet stores are also including items for pet enthusiasts to show love for their favorite animal friends. They include a wall keepsake with your pet's paw print and framed picture, calendars, and clothing with animals on them and cat and dog shower curtains.

Fagan said she's bought her previous dog a sweater before.

"It was a little dog, and I thought it would be cute," she said. "Plus, I wanted to keep it warm."

Fagan said her dog will be excited to get her presents.

"I'll probably have to unwrap them for her, or she will rip them to pieces," Fagan said.
