Holidays in Old Town festivities start today

The Old Town Commercial Association will kick off Holidays in Old Town today with a tree-lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on the corner of Turner Street and Grand River Avenue in Lansing.

Children from the Grand River Magnet School will be singing for the event, in which 500 people are estimated to participate. Turner Street between Grand River Avenue and Clinton Street will be shut down to accommodate the crowd.

Many local businesses and galleries in Old Town will also have extended hours for holiday shoppers.

The celebration will continue through December 10 with daily events, concluding with "Santa Sampler," an event featuring salsa dancing with instruction, wine and beer tasting and silent and live auctions, at The Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River Ave., in Lansing. Tickets cost $12 in advance or with the donation of a new toy or $15 at the door.

Daily events:

Friday: Tree-lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday: Loft tours from 1-5 p.m.

Sunday: First Sunday Gallery Walk and Farm Market from 1-5 p.m.

Monday: Kids' Arts and Crafts at Haze Inc. at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday: Caroling through Old Town from 6 to 7 p.m.

Wednesday: Window painting from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday: Gift wrapping and Santa Visit at Creole Gallery, 1218 Turner St. from 7 to 8 p.m.

December 9: Carriage rides through Old Town from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

December 10: Santa Sampler at Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
