Raging against the cold

November 30, 2005

As the temperatures drop below freezing in East Lansing, many students are turning to bulky sweaters and sweats to stay warm. But these oversized and voluminous outfits aren't always the most fashion-conscious looks.

In pursuit of style to keep warm, apparel and textiles senior Rae Kolb has managed to turn cozy into chic.

Her snuggly look turns sexy with a short, light blue sweater dress she purchased in Paris. It'll keep her warm with its thick braiding and turtleneck collar. But its miniskirt length is fashionable. The Parisian frock is also decorated with utility straps to add to its trendy look.

To spice up her dress, Kolb has added a thick leather belt that rests on her hips and black, mid-calf boots that have a ruched effect up the front; both are from Charlotte Russe. She also has dangly, black earrings, which make the look a little more dressy. Accessories are one of the best ways to make something simple, such as Kolb's sweater dress, into a hip ensemble.

To further fight the cold, thick gray leggings from the Gap protect Kolb's legs while keeping them happening.

Her outfit is sweet and snug. Kolb said she's taken a page out of "Clueless" and "Sex and the City" for daily inspiration. Her look is also fashion forward — a unique combination of pieces that'll keep Kolb from turning into a popsicle during class.
